According to the Department for Energy and Climate Change, the majority of energy consumed in the domestic sector is for space heating which in 2011 represented 60 per cent of total domestic consumption. Therefore increasing the thermal performance of dwellings is a high priority in the Government’s plan to reduce carbon emissions believed to contribute to climate change.
This set of detail drawings focuses on those construction types that are ‘hard to treat’ – approximately one-third, most of which are uninsulated, single-skin masonry. Typical construction details and thermal performance data for the junctions with other walls, roofs, floors, windows and doors, and building services are provided. They describe a solution that offers a combined effect of improved thermal performance and appearance – attractive, insulated timber cladding.

The standard details are of an enhanced design that will assis compliance with the 2010 revision of Approved Document L for England and Wales. These enhancements include:
- 50mm deep insulated service void created by fixing battens to the inside face of the 140mm deep studs in external walls
- Improved insulation in party walls
SAP lists the situations in a typical building where cold bridging is likely to have a significant effect on overall thermal performance. TRADA Technology’s Building Performance Service has identified 20 critical details that arise in timber frame construction, and has calculated the Ψ-Value in each instance using ‘standard’ details published in Timber frame: standard details for houses and flats.
