Solid timber: sections and sizes
There are a number of different timber sections and sizes which are used in construction. Timber can be used ‘in the round’ but the majority of structural and constructional timber is sawn into rectangular sections.
This document explains some of the patterns used for sawing logs and the effect on each of the sections cut; it also contains a table which details the typical sizes of sawn softwood.
This document is a brief summary of the different sections and sizes of solid timber. For more information on sawn timber, please refer to the TRADA Wood Information Sheet (WIS)
